Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) is a militant separatist organization based in the Basque region of Spain and France. The organization has been designated as a terrorist group by Spain, the European Union, and the United States. Synonyms for ETA include Euzkadi Ta Askatasuna, which is ETA's official name in Basque. Other synonyms include the Basque Homeland and Freedom, Basque Country and Liberty, Basque Land and Liberty, and Basque Liberation Movement. ETA is known for its violent tactics, including bombings, shootings, and kidnappings, and has been responsible for hundreds of deaths over the past several decades. The organization declared a permanent cease-fire in 2011 and disbanded in 2018.
