Giving a talking-to is a way of scolding or admonishing someone for their behavior. However, there are many ways to communicate with someone without being harsh or negative. Some antonyms that come to mind are praising, complimenting, encouraging, motivating, supporting, inspiring, and advising. Alternatively, if there is a need to talk about negative behavior, there are softer ways of communicating such as expressing concerns, having a conversation, discussing, or giving feedback. Thus, while giving a talking-to is a common way of addressing behavior, it is good to know that there are many other ways of communicating that can be more positive and productive.
