Traditional grip is a well-known term in drumming, referring to the way drumsticks are held. However, there are a few other terms that can be used interchangeably with traditional grip. Such terms include jazz grip, orthodox grip, and American grip. In these grips, drummers tend to hold the stick with their right hand in an underhand fashion, while the left hand cradles the stick in an overhand position. While traditional grip may be emphasized by drummers who play jazz or other styles that rely heavily on snare drumming, it is not the only grip technique. For example, matched grip, where both hands hold the drumstick in the same manner, is also used by drummers across a wide range of musical genres.
