Alexander disease, also known as fibrinoid leukodystrophy, is a rare and fatal neurological disorder that affects the white matter of the brain. The disease is characterized by the buildup of protein deposits called Rosenthal fibers in the brain and spinal cord, which can lead to a range of symptoms such as seizures, poor coordination, developmental delays and personality changes. There are few synonyms for Alexander disease, but it is also commonly referred to as CNS leukodystrophy or megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts. Despite ongoing research, there is currently no cure for Alexander disease, and treatment is primarily focused on managing symptoms and supporting the patient's quality of life.
