Burking is an unsettling term, associated with the practice of killing someone by suffocation, in order to sell their body to anatomy schools in the 19th century. As such, it is not a word often used in today's vernacular. There are, however, several synonyms that can be used to describe this horrific practice. These include strangling, smothering, choking, and suffocating. Each of these words carries similarly gruesome connotations, and serves as a reminder of the dark side of human history. While seldom used today, the memory of burking serves as a cautionary tale of the consequences of unchecked greed and exploitation.
