Palanquins, also known as litter or sedan chairs, are chairs which are carried by people. These were commonly used in the past to transport people, especially those from royalty or nobility. There are several synonyms for palanquins such as hammocks, stretchers, carry chairs, palkis, dolis, and kagos. These words denote a carriage that is used for transporting people who are unable to walk or those who are of high status. Although these words have similar meanings, they differ in usage and origin. Nevertheless, they all refer to a means of transportation that involves carrying a person or persons by other individuals.
