Radial keratotomy, or RK, is a type of refractive surgery that was popular in the 1980s and 1990s for correcting nearsightedness. However, there are now several modern alternatives that are considered safer and more effective than RK. These include LASIK, PRK, and SMILE. LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery that uses a laser to create a thin, hinged flap in the cornea before reshaping it. PRK is a surface ablation technique in which the outer layer of the cornea is completely removed and then reshaped using a laser. SMILE is the latest minimally invasive laser eye surgery that only requires a small incision and no flap to be created.
